For centuries, coffee has been grown in Ethiopia. Not only is it a longstanding tradition, but it is also the birthplace of Arabica coffee. As Africa’s top producer, approximately 15 million people rely on some aspect of the industry for employment. Most of the coffee produced here is from old, naturally indigenous heirloom varieties, but the quality ranges, depending on the region it is grown in.
REGION: Worka-Sakaro, Gedeb District, Gedeo Zone, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region, Ethiopia
The small community of Worka-Sakaro is located on the narrow plateau, known as Yirgacheffe. This region is dense with savvy farmers, that produce some of the most beautiful, aromatic and candy-like natural coffees in all of Ethiopia. Yirgacheffe coffee is associated with floral and citrus notes, along with softer notes of berries and chocolate.
PRODUCER: Bekele Heto
Bekele has been cultivating coffee on his 38-acre farm for 14 years. He is a member of the Single Farmer Lots Program. This program is a unique micro-channel, that allows farmers with exceptional quality coffees to sell their crops as micro lots directly to buyers. All of his cherries are hand sorted before being dried on raised beds for 15-20 days. The beds are constructed carefully to ensure proper air circulation and temperature control. Coffee is Bekele Heto’s main source of income, which he uses to support his family of 14.
